Four 13-year-old friends build themselves a raft to ride the Millstone River on. They’ve kept the trip a secret and plan to be back before their parents start worrying about them. On the river, the raft floating high and dry, the friends are enjoying the ride – until they reach fast water and the sabotaged raft breaks apart, throwing them into the cold waters of the river. Stranded in the middle of the woods, they face a long, dangerous walk home.

Excerpt from S.O.S. Rocky Hill
Jed smiled and pointed towards the woods. ‘You see what the tornado did?’ he said. ‘Well, all those fallen trees have given me an idea.’ ‘I think I know,’ Carlos said. ‘You want to build a clubhouse.’ ‘Wrong,’ Jed said with a laugh. ‘A tree house,’ Chester said. ‘No, not a tree house,’ Jed said. ‘You have one more try.’ ‘A boat!’ Joline said. Jed laughed again. ‘You’re getting warm,’ he said. ‘I’ll give you an extra try.’ ‘I know,’ said Chester. ‘A raft!’ ‘Right! A raft!’ Jed looked at their surprised faces a moment and said, ‘Well, what do you think? It’s a good idea, isn’t it?’ ‘It sounds like a lot of fun to me!’ Joline said. ‘It sounds like a lot of work to me,’ Carlos said and smiled at the others. Chester had a serious look on his face. ‘I don’t know,’ he said slowly. ‘The trees don’t belong to us, they belong to the town.’ ‘Come on, Chester,’ Jed said. ‘You don’t really believe the town would miss a few trees, do you?’ ‘Maybe not, but what about our parents? I don’t think they would allow us to go off by ourselves on a raft. I know that mine wouldn’t.’ Chester looked at Joline and Carlos. Both of them nodded in agreement. Jed smiled at them. ‘Our parents wouldn’t have to know. They don’t tell us about everything they do, do they?
